“Speak Up” – Against Sexual Abuse……Let’s make a Difference

  • One day I received a mail with “personal issue” written in the subject. The mail was about this boy desperately asking for help. This 17year old boy was being brutally sexually abused by a 32 year old lady. It was horrific and traumatic experience for him.
  • I decided to help him and distance did not create any problem as i genuinely wanted to save this boy from the traumatic abuse. We should be thankful to technology as our sessions continued with help of skype, whats app, telephone, sms etc.
  • The first step included to STOP the abuse and then build confidence in him to “Speak Up” to his parents and inform them about this incident. Abused was stopped, his parents were informed and he felt secured. A long process was involved to help him overcome his traumatic memories. When parents knew about the abuse, they accepted him and provided appropriate support.
  • We also got in touch with the legal associates to guide us through the process. As a result of which, this lady is behind bars and hence we got success in our mission.
  • Like many others, this young boy was like a broken glass. We gathered all pieces together and tried to stick it but cracks are still visible. Counselling helped him. He was later involved in a relationship with a girl and has shown great progress in his academics, improved social life and increased his confidence and self esteem.
  • It is definitely possible to STOP the abuse and gradually get back to your own lifestyle. All you need to do is “Speak up” against the abuse. Let’s make a Difference.
  • This “Speak up “ initiative is for people who:
  • Are currently being victims of any kind of sexual abuse
  • Scared to speak up and inform their parents about the abuse
  • Want to stop being abused
  • Want to undergo counselling to deal with this abuse.

Counselling could be conducted  with the help of various virtual technologies like:

Classroom Observation

With the help of this blog, I would like to inform about my role as a “School Counsellor” in the area of “Classroom Observation”.

Classroom Observation is planned in collaboration and discussion with the homeroom/ specialist teacher for the benefit of the referred child or the classroom.

The Classroom Observation may be a block or a single homeroom  period.

If the child is referred from specialist then Classroom Observation would also take place in that specific period.

The purpose of classroom observation is:

∙         To observe the child/ children in classroom setting along with his peers and teacher.
.        To understand the behaviour and to know more about their academic status.
∙         To understand the child’s responses and behavior in a social setting i.e to check his social skills.
∙         To help in Classroom Management. (if required)∙
.         To help the referred child and other children in the class who would need individual assistance in academics, social skills or behaviour management.
∙          To check and gather more details about the behaviour or the presenting problems of the referred child.
∙         To help teacher execute learning engagements, task, activities, worksheets for differentiated learning.
∙         To identify any particular issue that could be dealt as part of Classroom Counselling.

I generally suggest the Homeroom Teachers that it would be beneficial for the class, if they could arrange and plan some stand alone task like numeracy, literacy or UOI related activities during the decided time as I could be a part of the class and help all children specially the academically weak children with my assistance and personal attention.

It is also suggested that,if a learning engagement is planned in the decided time where my assistance would not be needed in academic (writing) related tasks like filing of sheets, portfolio, making charts, colouring, presentations etc then it would be appreciated if the homeroom teacher informs in advance of the change and with discussion another time could be planned for the classroom observation.

There would be regular discussion with the teacher to gather additional inputs about a particular child and to plan differentiated learning tasks or worksheets.

I have classroom observations from grade 1 to grade 6. My classroom observation style is not only to observe the child’s behaviour in classroom setting but also to help that particular referred child or other academically weak children in the classroom who need personal assistance in academics.

Its fun to be in class for observation as I feel we can be more connected with the children and also understand the classroom dynamics and teacher – child relationship..

Share your experiences, styles and opinions about classroom observation….

Have a Happy Observation…
